Guest Lecturer: William “Bill” Hendricks on Woody Plant Selections for the Shade Garden

Draves Arboretum is honored to welcome world-class speaker, horticultural expert, life-long learner and lover of plants, Bill Hendricks.

Bill takes an engaging and practical look at small trees and shrubs that thrive in shaded landscapes. Drawing on experience and real-world examples, this lecture highlights dependable woody plants that bring structure, texture, and year-round interest to gardens where sun is limited.

Formerly President of Klyn Nurseries from 1987-2024, Bill’s amazing career continues as a guest lecturer and member of numerous professional horticultural organizations. He was the past President of Lake County Nurserymen’s Association and has served on review boards for publications including “Handbook of Landscape Tree Cultivars” by Willet Wandell, “Street Tree Fact Sheets” edited by Penn State University, and “Landscape Plants for Ohio” published by Ohio Nursery & Landscape Association.

Bill was the recipient of ONLA Distinguished Contribution Award, named “2014 Grower of the Year” by Nursery Management Magazine and given the Horticultural Industries Leadership Award in 2011 from Nursery Management Magazine. He’s also the recipient of Ohio Landscape Association Lifetime Dedication and Outstanding Contributions to the Landscape Industry Award March 2010 and Awarded the 1998 Associated Green Industries “Person of the Year” and the Award of Merit and Fellow of International Plant Propagators in 2008. Bill’s other interests also include photography, world travel and his personal cactus and succulent collection of over 4,000 species (started at age 9)!
